Respective societies Essay
How do the writers of Jane Eyre and Of Mice and Men show Crooks and Jane to be outsiders in their respective societies? Howard Jenkins 11R How do the writers of Jane Eyre and Of Mice and Men show Crooks and Jane to be outsiders in their respective societies? In the novels Jane Eyre and Of Mice and Men both novels are protesting about social injustices. These injustices lead to many of the characters being outsiders or they are outsiders because they donââ¬â¢t fit into accepted conventions. People are outsiders due to injustices and their differences. One of the techniques that both Charlotte Bronte and John Steinbeck use to show both Jane and Crooks as outsiders is by making them ranked lower socially compared to those around them. In Jane Eyre Jane is ranked lower than her Aunt and cousins as they are middle-class and she is someone from the lower class living in their house. This creates the impression on the reader that she is an outsider in their middle-class world very effectively. She is looked down on by her Aunt and cousins as if she does not deserve the respect that a servant would get as at least a servant works for their food and room. This attitude has been conveyed to the servants and Miss Abbott notes, ââ¬Å"She is worse than a servant for she does nothing for her keep. â⬠This technique works very effectively to show that Jane is an outsider. In Of Mice and Men Steinbeck uses a similar technique to portray Crooks as an outsider. Because Crooks is black he is seen as inferior to most of the men on the ranch due to the racist views at the time the book was written. As with Jane in Jane Eyre this portrays Crooks as an outsider on the ranch as he is not accepted by most of the other men. Crooks is only too aware of their attitudes and he tells Lennie, ââ¬Å"They think I stink. â⬠The language in the novels also helps to portray the characters of Jane and Crooks as outsiders. In Jane Eyre the story is narrated in the first person narrative. This engages the readerââ¬â¢s sympathy. The narration causes the reader to trust her as she is not liked by everyone and Jane quite openly admits this. Also the surroundings in Jane Eyre show Gateshead to be a miserable place for Jane. The rooms are places that, for Jane, are filled with cold and dread, even in the nursery where you would expect her to feel happy and play with toys is a miserable place. Jane cannot touch the dollââ¬â¢s house furniture, ââ¬Å"for the tiny chairs and mirrors were Georgianaââ¬â¢s property,â⬠This sort of writing shows the reader how hard a life Jane lives at Gateshead and how she is seen by those she lives with. She is not permitted to touch things that belong to those who are a higher social class than her and she is not even happy in the childââ¬â¢s nursery. By demonising the Reed family, Bronte ensures our sympathy for Jane. The harshness of the weather in the novel reinforces the harshness of Janeââ¬â¢s life with the Reeds. The weather is always cold with a winter wind and rain making any outdoor exercise and an escape from the walls of Gateshead quite impossible. Jane looks through the glass of the windows at the grounds ââ¬Å"where all was still and petrified under the influence of a hard frost. â⬠The harshness and cold of the weather reflect Janeââ¬â¢s lack of love at Gateshead. However Bronte allows Bessie to show her affection and Jane says, ââ¬Å"even for me life had its gleams of sunshineâ⬠Bronte also uses symbolism elsewhere in the novel. For example the window separates known from unknown, inside from outside. The world outside the window offers Jane more happiness. It is apparent that Charlotte Bronte manipulated her use of language so that the setting and elements in this novel appear as objective reflections for the inner life. Steinbeck does not use symbolism as extensively as Bronte, but the bare, isolated harness room represents his alienation on the ranch. There are many similarities between the characters and situations of Jane Eyre and Crooks. Both of the characters are seeking independence. Jane shows this by always speaking her mind rebelliously and in doing so angering those around her, ââ¬Å"If she were a nice, pretty child one might compassionate her forlornness but one really cannot care for such a little toad as that. â⬠Similarly, Crooks keeps a defensive distance from the others and is described as a ââ¬Å"proud aloof man. â⬠This creates compassion for the characters by the reader. Another similarity between the characters is that they are both seeking for companionship. Jane is excluded form the Reeds and is unloved, but she does not enjoy this isolation, ââ¬Å"If others donââ¬â¢t love me I would rather die than live. â⬠Crooks is also lonely as he is excluded from the other men on the ranch because he is black, but he too feels that loneliness is destructive, ââ¬Å"Books ainââ¬â¢t no good. A guy needs someone to be near him. â⬠When Lennie is taliking about the ranch in Of Mice and Men Crooks is quick to offer his services on the new ranch hoping for some companionship, ââ¬Å"If you guys would want a hand to work for nothing just his keep why Iââ¬â¢d come and lend a hand. â⬠Another similarity between the two characters is that they are both bullied by those around them. Jane is bullied by her cousins, especially John Reed, ââ¬Å"He bullied and punished me, not two or three time in the week, nor once or twice in the day but continually. â⬠Crooks has been bullied by other men on the ranch because he is black and different to them, but he is destroyed by Curleyââ¬â¢s wifeââ¬â¢s cruel taunts and threats and he withdraws into himself, ââ¬Å"Crooks had reduced himself to nothing. There was no personality, no ego ââ¬â nothing to arouse either like or dislike. â⬠Both Jane and Crooks are physically isolated from the rest of those around them. Jane is banished by Mrs Reed to the kitchen and Crooks is excluded from the other menââ¬â¢s activities. Jane says, ââ¬Å"From every enjoyment I was, of course, excludedâ⬠And Crooks tells Lennie, ââ¬Å"They play cards in there, but I canââ¬â¢t play because Iââ¬â¢m black. They say I stink. â⬠Jane and crooks are very proud individuals. Jane tells her aunt that the Reed children, ââ¬Å"are not fit to associate with meâ⬠and Crooks was a, ââ¬Å"Proud, aloof manâ⬠Both writers make their characters more appealing by presenting them as feisty and courageous at times. A common attribute that both Steinbeck and Bronte use to portray Jane and Crooks as outsiders in the novel is that both characters read to escape from their own miserable, lonely existences. Jane says, ââ¬Å"I soon possessed myself a volume, taking care that it should be one stored with pictures,â⬠and, ââ¬Å"With Bewick on my knee I was happy. â⬠Crooks too withdraws into a world of books, ââ¬Å"And he had books too a tattered dictionary and a mauled copy of the California civil code for 1905. â⬠Books are the only things that these characters can communicate with and again their love of literature endears them to us. Overall the authors of Jane Eyre and Of Mice and Men use many similar techniques to make the characters Jane and Crooks appear as outsiders in the novels. The authorial purpose is obvious, the writers have sympathy with the underdog and through their characters they challenge the reader to question their consciences.

Ogden Nash Poem ââ¬ÅKindly Unhitch That Star, Buddyââ¬Â Essay
All people in the world live their entire lives to become something greater than they actually are. The quest for success in life is never-ending and people are never satisfied with what they have. In the poem ââ¬Å"Kindly Unhitch that Star, Buddyâ⬠Nash warns not to dream for a goal that cannot be attained, in other words peopleââ¬â¢s long and arduous journey through life is pointless and success is unattainable. Nash uses diction effectively in kindly unhitch that star to show how peoples quests for success differs in many ways. He uses the phrase ââ¬Å"â⬠¦ others seem to think theyââ¬â¢ll get just as far by devoting their evenings to the stuffy of the difference between brunettance and blondanceâ⬠(Nash 21) to show the superficial paths people take to become successful. The key words in this phrase are ââ¬Å"brunnetance and blondanceâ⬠(21), which are words made up by Nash to show that a person believes that by changing their hair colour to stand out more will help them achieve success. Nash uses well-organized diction when he writes: Which perhaps is just as well because if everybody was a success nobody could be contemptuous of anybody else and everybody would start in all over again trying to be a bigger success than everybody else so they would have somebody to be contemptuous of and so on forevermore (28-31) The word contemptuous is used twice in this phrase and it adds to the effect of the entire stanza. Contemptuous is a strong and effective word used to describe the feeling of successful people towards the average Joe, inferior or worthless. He uses this word to emphasize that if everyone was equal they would trying to become more successful which proves the idea that the journey through life will never be complete enough even if you end up being successful. In addition to the authors efficient use of diction he uses parallel structure to show the same ideas of methods on how to attain success in life. In line nine and ten are constructed parallel to lines twenty-two to line twenty-three the first idea, ââ¬Å"Indeed, everybody wants to be a wow, /but not everybody knows exactly how.â⬠(9-10) is parallel to the idea ââ¬Å"In short,à the world is filled with people trying to achieve success, /and half of them think theyââ¬â¢ll get it by saying No and half of them by/saying yes.â⬠(22-23) these ideas both express the idea that all people want to be successful and nobody wants to be a failure but people have different views on how to go about achieving success. Another example of parallel structure within ââ¬Å"Kindly Unhitch that Star, Buddyâ⬠is when Nash states ââ¬Å"â⬠¦ other people think they will be able to put in more time at Palm/ Beach and the Ritz.â⬠(13-14) is related to ââ¬Å"â⬠¦ others seem to think theyââ¬â¢ll get just as far by devoting their evenings to the stuffy of the difference between brunettance and blondanceâ⬠(19-21). These two lines both compel the ideas of the shallow methods people will try to become successful in the world. In lines thirteen and fourteen the superficial idea of hanging around already famous people at the Ritz and Palm Beach will make you successful as well, similarly the idea in the other quote shows the idea that someone believes they will become more prosperous in life by simply changing their hair colour. The third literary device that is very evident in Ogden Nashââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"Kindly Unhitch that Star, Buddyâ⬠is irony. The entire poem is written in a very ironic fashion but this irony is most apparent very early in the poem when Nash writes ââ¬Å"And in celestial circles all the run-of-the-mill angels would rather be/ archangels or at least cherubim and seraphim,â⬠(5-6) This is ironic because angels are supposed to be higher beings without any superficial desires or wishes of successfulness. Nash uses this to show that angels should be satisfied with what they are and this can be compared to the lives of many people in the real world trying futilely to become successful. Another example of irony is used when Ogden Nash coins the phrase ââ¬Å"Some people think they will eventually bear diamonds instead of rhinestones, / Only by everlasting keeping their noses to their ghrinestones,â⬠(11-12). Nash modifies this phrase slightly by changing grindstones to ghrinestones to show that people want to bear diamonds in life but in the end all they will achieve is rhinestones, or failure. Nash uses irony effectively and efficiently throughout the entire poem but it is distinctively evident in lines thirteen to twenty one when Nash writes about the different methods of success people try: And other people think they will be able to put in more time at Beach and the Ritz By not paying to much attendance at the office but rather in being brilliant by starts and fits. Some people after a full days work sit up all night getting a college education by correspondence, While others seem to think theyââ¬â¢ll get just as far by devoting their evenings to the study of the difference in temperament between brunetteance and blondance (13-21) In these nine lines Ogden Nash describes four different schemes that particular people have to become successful in life. He covers a lot of methods of achieving success such as hard work, eccentricity, and popularity to show that none of these pursuits will make you a successful person because in the end all your efforts to strive for success are in vain. Through diction, parallel structure and irony Nash demonstrates how an average Joeââ¬â¢s journey through life and his striving to become successful will most likely end in failure. The theme of the quest for success is futile in ââ¬Å"Kindly Unhitch that Star, Buddyâ⬠is a good example of peopleââ¬â¢s obsession with success and the value of their life based on that success, people should be satisfied with their life and not trying to live up to something that is unachievable.

Building an Environmentally Sustainable Home Research Paper - 1
Building an Environmentally Sustainable Home - Research Paper Example While putting in place windows, it is vital to ensure that they are better insulated and sealed. Multipane windows insulated with gas; for instance, argon, inside the spaces in between them can help prevent heat loss. The glass used on these windows is sometimes glazed to regulate the amount of solar energy coming into the house. This reduces glare and builds on windowsââ¬â¢ solar heat gain coefficient that is the ability of the window to prevent sunlight from increasing indoor temperatures. The efficiency of a window increases with a decrease in the value of its solar heat gain coefficient. Combining the technologies of multipane and glazing boosts the ability of windows to insulate a house. If one cannot afford these technologies, they can opt for non-metallic window frames (Maczulak 38). Sometimes, a house can heat up too much during sunny seasons. In such a case, it is essential to install reflective insulation.à Comprehensive insulation combines both reflective insulation and thermal insulation. People use a lot of energy in tending their home yards. People commonly use lawn mowers powered by fossil fuels or string trimmers but this emits harmful gases to the environment. Green lawns and gardens are grown using fertilizers that have chemicals that can find their way into groundwater and contaminate it. This can by extension contaminates drinking water. Poor drainage of rain runoff can degenerate into floods and burst sewers. Native plants make eco-friendly lawns that are way better than grass seeds that are bagged. Landscaping should seek to save on space with native wildflowers. Native wildflowers do not require a lot of fertilizers to grow, and one gets to cut on the harmful chemicals released into the surroundings. They also save groundwater from pollution and reduce money needed to tend a lawn. Eco-friendly landscaping directs the planting of shade trees that help protect the house from too much solar energy especially sunny seasons (Wubben 37). It is crucial to check on how one manages water in and around the house. Some studies suggest that water heating consumes up to about a third of the total energy consumption in a house. Tankless water heating is a good way to cut on unnecessary energy use. It heats water as and when needed without keeping it in a chamber that is insulated. They are expensive to install, but they are very efficient in saving energy. Other ways to manage energy used in water heating include ensuring that the water heater used is proportional to the people living in the house (Brebbia 47).

Security Policy Description - Term Paper Example In the current scenario there is no policy in place, as the company is new. One key element for a policy development process is the process maturity level. For instance, a newly derived comprehensive and complex security policy cannot be successful because organizations need time for compliance. Common pitfalls for compliance are different organization cultures, lack of management buy-in, insufficient resources and many other factors. For a newly inaugurated car leasing company, the initial step would be to publish a policy that includes bulleted points i.e. in the form of checklists. Afterwards, when the processes are matured, more policies can be developed with comprehensive and detailed requirements along with documentations for Standard operating procedures (SOP). Moreover, providing awareness of the newly developed policy will also need time to mature and align with different departmental policies already in place. To gain management buy in for any newly develop policy, it must be operational as early as possible so that changes can be made and customized in alignment with the corporate business requirements. As the policy development process can be triggered at various stages, regulations are vital motivators that are one of the key reasons for developing or modifying a policy. Moreover, any security breach resulting in a poor incident response plans and procedures can also be a factor to review or create a new incident response policy and incident response plan. The ââ¬Ëtop-downââ¬â¢ approach that will consult policy making from best practices and regulations will make only the presence of an non-natural policy with no results, as it will not be effective in the real world scenario. On the other hand, ââ¬Ëbottom-upââ¬â¢ approach that will take inputs from the network administrator or Information Technology specialist will be too specific and according to the local practices that will not address issues in the current operational environment o f a corporate organization. Recommendations will be to find a balance and combination between these two approaches. --------------------------------------- Information Security Policy Document (ISPD) for AMERCO Car Leasing Company The information security policy is drafted from one of the templates from SANS that claims on their website to be the most trusted and the largest source for information security research in the world that focuses on certification, research and training. Scientific Knowledge in Regards to Social and Politics Arena Essay
Scientific Knowledge in Regards to Social and Politics Arena - Essay Example Scientific knowledge has grown to become the backbone of human survival and a remedy to various problems in both the social and political arena. Scientific knowledge has been used as a valuable tool by various governments to dominate over other countries with less experience on similar inventions, such as the manufacture of nuclear weapons. Since every country in the world seeks power over another, a lot has been invested into scientific knowledge in terms of financial support to ensure the creation these plants and weapons. In western countries, science has changed the political power because of the power of it (Gusterson 14).This clearly indicates that scientific knowledge has contributed to political actions whereby governments of developed countries dominate over others. Ã Moreover, scientific knowledge can be claimed to be a source of power due to the discoveries it has contributed to human society. In both political and social arena, scientific knowledge has helped a lot. It has led to the discovery of solutions to mitigate or control health-related diseases in the social realm. Scientific understanding has been acknowledged in many countries as a source of breakthrough to human-related issues. Research institutions have been raised up in different areas and scientists work day and night to come up with solutions associated with human society. Therefore, scientific knowledge has changed the way mankind goes on with his/her daily life by coming up with inventions or answers to alleviate threats to human life. This can be observed after the Chernobyl disaster in Ukraine; scientific researchers shape the social and political life of the victims and the nation. Scientific knowledge was incorporated in coming up with ways of solving and assisting the victims of the nuclear plant that exploded in Ukraine.

A Focus on the Different Economic Principles and Theories of John M Term Paper
A Focus on the Different Economic Principles and Theories of John M. Keynes - Term Paper Example Keynesian economic principles promote mixed economies in which both the state as well as the private sector will play significant roles. The emergence of Keynesian economics closed the curtain on laissez-faire economics that were based on the idea that markets as well as the private sectors could be able to operate independently without government intervention (Keynes, 1936). Keynesian economists believe in the government's role to level the business environment. State intervention may take the form of tax breaks and government spending with a view of stimulating the economy. In good economic times, government expenditure cuts as well as tax hikes would help curb inflation (Blinder, 2006). This paper advances Keynesââ¬â¢s theory that the best way to ensure economic stability and growth is by active government intervention in the marketplace and monetary policy. Keynesian Principles Keynes differed with the Classical economic theories posing various arguments to disapprove them. Basically, Keynes believed that markets could not automatically attain full-employment equilibrium, but rather, the economy would settle in equilibrium at any given level of unemployment (Blinder, 2006). This implies that the classical principles of non-intervention by government would not apply. For the economy to grow in the correct direction, it would require prodding and this means active government intervention in order to manage the demand level. The Keynesian principles are illustrated on the basis of circular income flow. In case of disequilibrium between income injections and leakages, then, according to classical economists, prices would move to appropriately restore the equilibrium. However, Keynes principles that the output level (National Income) will adjust appropriately in attempt to restore equilibrium (Keynes, 1936). For instance, if, for some reason, there is a rise in income injections, say due to increased government expenditure, an imbalance would result between injections and leakages. Following the resulting extra aggregate demand, firms will tend to employ more persons and this would result in more income within the economy. Some of this income could be spent while some would be saved or remitted in tax. The extra expenditure is likely to prompt most of the firms in that economy to increase their production further creating even more employment opportunities and in turn increasing income within the economy. This process will continue until it finally comes to a stop. It would finally stop since with every increase in income, leakagesââ¬â¢ levels also increase (tax, savings and imports). When income injections finally equal the leakages, equilibrium will be restored. This process, according to Keynes is referred to as the Multiplier effect (Blinder, 2006). Keynesian Theories Keynes suggested that it was not a perfect idea to rely on market s in order to attain full employment in the economy. He believed strongly in his view that economies can settle at any given equilibrium. As a result, there couldnââ¬â¢t be automatic changes that could correct equilibrium in the markets. The main theories used to justify the Keynesian view are: The labor market theory (the monetarist theory), the money market theory (market for loan-able fund theory), the Multiplier effect theory and the Keynesian Inflation Theory (Keynes, 1936). Monetarist Theory: The Labor Market To Keynes, wage determination is more complex. First, he pointed out that it nominal wages but not real wages that are often subjected to negotiations between workers and their employers such as in barter relationship. In the first place, it is very difficult to effect nominal wage cuts due

Leadership Coursework Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 3500 words
Leadership - Coursework Example These numerous studies have identified a variety of skills, personalities, and competencies that leaders possess. These studies include the renowned political and sociological legendary leaders as well as in the organizational set up. In the present context, an evaluation of the concept of leadership is done based on the teachings of Hughes, Ginnett and Curphy (2008) who assert that leadership is a complex phenomenon that involves the leader, the followers, and the situation. In the present context, leadership is assessed based on these three critical elements; in addition, leadership skills essential for effective leadership have been evaluated. Further, impact of management on leadership and vice versa has also been assessed. These evaluations are based on leadership conceptualization of Hughes et al (2008) with reference to leadership conceptualization made by Zenger and Folkman (2009). References have been made to Zaleznikââ¬â¢s (1992) article that differentiates manages from leaders. Personal experiences with respect to leadership have also been opined and explained. Considering Hughes et al.ââ¬â¢s (2008) explanation of leadership, it is difficult to arrive at one specific definition of leadership because the definition depends upon the kind of leader being studied, the situation as well as the followersââ¬â¢ perception of their leader.... These people are self driven and proactive. However, for leaders to be effective, they must possess specific skills, which will enhance their effectiveness as leaders. Zaleznik (1992) describes individual leader as a person with unique qualities that distinguishes the leader form the rest of the group on the basis of courage, personality, and ability to control others. This does not mean that leaders tend to exert power or authority to control others or display their courage. Though famous leaders are known to have lead by these qualities, they possess other qualities that actually attract huge masses of people into believing in what the leader believes and influence them to achieving what the leader envisages. This means the leaderââ¬â¢s vision eventually becomes peopleââ¬â¢s shared vision. Leaders can exert such influence on others through their effective and powerful communication, convincing abilities, inspiring speeches, conversations as well as actions. Zaleznik (1992) ar gued that leadership cannot be taught or trained; however, Hughes et al (2008) assert that leadership can be taught and leaders can be made. Usually great leaders or highly talented people emerge from those who were once seen as submissive, self-absorbed, or indifferent. Zaleznik (1992) refers to Albert Einstein, who was once seen as a mediocre and timid student in school and later became the worldââ¬â¢s renowned scientist through his irrefutable discoveries and propositions. Einstein is known as a human being with unique set of abilities and passion for his work. Though he is known to be highly talented, he was extremely hardworking and passionate towards his work, which took him to the great discoveries. Other such notable leaders are Abraham

Natural environment Essay Example for Free
Natural environment Essay History depicts that in the past, apartheid and Christian national education policies meant that races and cultures were segregated in schools and resources were unevenly distributed, making the role and the task of the teacher extra difficult in terms of balancing between the workload and catering for all learners needs. Education is inherently political as it involves values and goals in relation to such fundamental questions as what kind of individual and society are we trying to shape? These questions cannot be answered in a factual or technical way because they are questions of opinions, values and ideology and they are inevitably disagreements and conflicts (Carter, Harber Serfi, 2003). The nature and reality of educators is that, it places so much importance on the teacher to ensure that learners succeed at the end of the day, although there are some factors external such as the environment, socio-economic and resources issues and resources which disturbs or defeats the purpose of education. The teacher can either make or break the progress of the learner, meaning the teacher should cater equally for all the needs of the learners, as learners themselves are different in terms of race, gender and class. This means that the teacher should not be bias or discriminate towards a certain gender, race or class, as this will have a negative impact on the success or progress of the learners. In this essay I will discuss my experiences with the teachers who made a difference, the role they played in terms of perceiving gender, race and class in my life, and the reasons why they were significant and finally I will discuss the role I will play as a future teacher regardless of gender, race and class of the learners. The most features in class or school environment, is for the teacher to understand his or her learners and mostly interact with them on continuous basis, as problems learners encounter arise from time to time. These problems tend to distract learners and need the intervention of the teacher themselves. Sometimes learners struggle with the content required, a problem at home or moreover a personal problem. A good teacher must anticipate and have insight of foretelling and differenti ate amongst learners that are showing signs of encountering problem

Edward Taylor Essay Example for Free
Edward Taylor Essay Living during the late 1600ââ¬â¢s, Edward Taylor lived through a time of many hardships. With the constant battles between colonists and natives going on, he lived in fear of his home and life being in jeopardy. Yet, through this terrifying time, he wrote poetry that earned him the name of the best colonial poet. Some aspects that can be looked at of his writing are his style, subject matter, and tone. The first area of his writing is his style. Edward Taylorââ¬â¢s style consists of both easy to understand sentences, and a fluid happy word choice that shows the loving side of god. An example of his style is ââ¬Å"Lord clear my misted sight that I May hence view they divinityâ⬠(Taylor). This sentence shows his focus on god and word choice, and comes from his piece ââ¬Å"Upon a Wasp Chilled with Coldâ⬠. The next area to go over of Taylorââ¬â¢s writing is his subject matter. The main aspects that he writes about are God and how he is gracious, and how he is evident in every day life events. This can be shown in the passage ââ¬Å"My words, and actions, that their shine may fill My ways with glory and Thee glorifyâ⬠(Taylor), from his writing ââ¬Å"Huswiferyâ⬠. He is very clear on what he wants to show and clear about his Puritan faith. Last of all the areas of Taylorââ¬â¢s writing is his tone. The tone of his pieces show a very happy and hoping attitude toward life. He clearly shows how he wants people to see the grace of go and how they can be forgiven, rather than the radical view of Godââ¬â¢s wrath. This tone can be seen in the passage ââ¬Å"Where all my pipes inspired upraise An heavenly music furred with praiseâ⬠(Taylor), from his piece ââ¬Å"Upon a Wasp Chilled with Coldâ⬠. Edward Taylor goes down as a great colonial poet for a reason, and through his work that reason is easily seen. With aspects like style, subject matter, and tone, his writing is a crisp example of how to incorporate God into poetry in a hopeful matter. Everything about Taylor, from his childhood to his adult life, portrays his amazing character and strong love towards God. His writing has surely made the impact on people that he wanted of showing people Gods grace.

Changing face of Indian Fashion Changing face of Indian Fashion ââ¬Å"Language disguises the thought, so that from the external form of the clothes one cannot infer the form of the thought they clothe, because the external form of the clothes is constructed with quite another object than to let the form of the body be recognizedâ⬠(Calefato 2004. p 13). The western culture is cultivating a grand love affair with the distinctive fashion style in India. Along with Indian music and spirituality, Indian clothing is seeing a huge impact on main stream identities of western style and culture. The main intention of this essay is to demonstrate how this emerging trend relates to the changing face of Indian fashion. Fashion is the style and custom prevalent at a given time. To some its an art form, to others its like a part of their culture and religion but to most it is a method of utilizing cloth to show or hide something about themselves. Fashion can be used to serve as an extension of ones own personality or to disguise ones own true self. One of the major points here is, how does art, culture and industry, the three aspects of life, relate to fashion? The English dictionary states that, art is a human skill opposed to nature. There are various for and against argument on whether fashion is an art form. One view that favors the argument is, art is a visual medium whose creators respond to the same stimuli as painters and sculptors and like art, it involves immense creativity as well as mastery of technique and materials. The view against it is, artists supposedly are not concerned with selling, they are consumed with creating works of art, not producing a collection for regularly scheduled s howings (Rhodes, 2003). Culture on the other hand is basically an ââ¬Ëintellectual development at a certain time and a certain place and refers to certain human behavior and activities that conclude to significance and importance whereas; industry is a segment of economy, concerned with the production of goods and service. It is an essential component of most societies and fashion is a huge contributor to it. The major fashion cities have continuous competition between each other and due to their different strategies become known as the ââ¬Ëcultural industries. The history of costume, Barthes (1983) says, has a general epistemological value. By ââ¬Ëhistory of costume, he means a socio-semiotic reading of the phenomenon of clothing as an articulate language through which it is possible to analyse a culture, as system and process, institution and individual act, expressive reserve and significant order. The nature of fashion, however, constantly changes and focuses on newness , or the illusion of something new which means that signs and symbols are transient. According to Woodruffe-Burton ââ¬Å"fashion is a visual commentary on the excess of a postmodern culture, the perfect foil for a world of fragmented and commensurate identities and personage, offering a dynamic procession of free floating signs and symbolic exchangesâ⬠(Woodruffe-Burton 1998, page 302). Choices made in relation to new clothes are usually controlled by the current fashion ââ¬Ëlook as defined within the fashion system and realized by the availability of fresh goods (Alexandra, 2004). According to Barthes (1983), the concept of new lifestyle and fashion styles is ââ¬Å"signifiedâ⬠while the fashion commodities become ââ¬Å"signifiersâ⬠. He also points out that the present form of fashion commodities decrease in value and are subsequently relinquished when the new signifier readily provides a replacement for the previous signifier. In addition, Baudrillad (1981) referred to fashion as a ââ¬Å"compulsion to innovate signsâ⬠¦apparently arbitaray and perpetual production of meaning a kind of meaning driveâ⬠. The meanings drive individuals, to seek out those new commodities that could signify them. According to Vinken, The discourse on fashion is constructed by the articulations of three major conceptual articulations: the division of being and mer e appearance; the division of the sexes; and inseparably linked to the latter the division of the classes. In modern times, there has been a marked tendency for the first of these conceptualities whether it appears in its philosophical form or in its ethical application to be incorporated into the sociological variations of the divisions of gender and class. This phenomenon of compression has been compounded by the fact that the paradigm of the division of the sexes has allowed itself to be grafted onto the discourse on class, dominant until the eighteenth century, with the same ease that, in traditional thought, the moral condemnation of vanity let itself be combined with the philosophical suspicion of mere appearanceâ⬠(Vinken, p4) India during its earlier days to be clothed in fashion was seen as a mark of privilege enjoyed exclusively by upper class. The lower end of the society didnt have the access to it due to the dominance of traditional clothing which followed inten sively during that time. But now it has changed for the better and is being enjoyed by almost everyone at every social level because of the democratization of fashion which has helped in mass production during the Industrial Revolution. The appearance of avant-garde designers from Japan in the early 1980s was believed to be the beginning of the postmodern phenomenon in the field of fashion. It allows openness to a great variety of styles and genres and the acceptance of Asian designers which was considered as the breakdown of the racial boundaries among designers who were largely white. Post modernity allows ethnic minorities, from women, lesbians and gay men to state find or retrieve an identity (Wilson 1994). The definition of what is fashionable was gradually decreasing in its nature with the beginning of postmodernism which eliminated differences and with the end of the autonomous sphere of fine art. What was usually worn as underwear now could be worn as outerwear. What used to be a hole for the neck could be worn as an armhole. Contents of fashions have become diverse and have redefined themselves implying the breakdown of the clothing system, itself that is, of sartorial conventions. The emergence of the new modern India seems to be the buss word for the new younger generation exposed to the vision of the new millennium as India opened up its doors to the west, there came a need to create a new identity. Thus was the idea of taking Indian traditional fabrics and styles and combining them with western cuts and lines, to appeal to larger segments and masses. Due to these developments, fashion gained in acceptance out of selected cities into the most conservative households. The new emerging trend catered way to the concept of Indian fashion boutiques, due to which women started moving out of the house and those typical tailor master were out of fashion. When more and more women started doing job, the online boutiques proved to be of great help as they can find everything under one roof, from fabric, designing, stitching and accessories (Chawla, 2006). Earlier to have a desired design, effort was needed to be put on to run from shop to shop to buy the fabric. Once the fabric is bought, the matching colour of laces and buttons need to bought and all these need to be given to the tailor for completing the stitching of the garment. Now, all these headaches are been taken care by the boutiques which keep a complete range of stitched and unstitched garments from casuals to party wear. The mall culture and family stores has dominated and is steadily growing in India. These are the places which are starting to become a favorite fashion hub for upper and middle class people. These stores sell fashion garments of all age groups and sexes and are considered as shopping destination. Most Indians express a great deal through their clothing. Their quench for the ultimate perfection plays a great deal in their choice of beautifully colored dramatic and sensuous garments. Highly lively colors woven in to signify the ornate designs can be found resonating through the whole of India. Lot of western influences has created modern designs which has been included into the basic structure of Indian outfit and that are the dresses that we find these days. So that makes us wonder, what was Indian fashion actually like when there were no designers displaying their haute couture to pamper a luxurious line of clientele? Well the answer to it is, India had its own kind of customs and traditions followed from generation to generations, the presence of it are even felt today. A surprising fact about ancient Indian fashion was that the clothes were not stitched together at all because most of the clothing was ready-to-wear, as soon as they left the loom. The ancient Indian fashion did not really have garments that were sewed together. The examples of these are the dhoti, the sari, the turban and the scarf. The practice of wearing dhoti by men and women were seen as a familiar site since India always go through hot and humid climatic conditions and these were made with cotton which suits the condition. The traditional Indian Dhoti, the Scarf or Uttariya and the popular Turban are still seen visible in India as people continue to wear them and hence remains as an integral part of Indian culture. Indian dressing styles are marked by many variations, both religious and regional with a wide choice of textures and styles (Tirthankar, 1999). One of the most commonly worn traditional dresses, the sari, is essentially a rectangular cloth measuring about 6 yards long. It passes through the legs around the body and tucked in at the back. Its worn in varied styles and is made from materials like pure silk or other fabric woven in different textures with different pattern s. It is worn by women as the lower garment combined with a Stanapatta (a thin band that wraps horizontally around torso) which forms the basic wear. This consists of garments that do not have to be stitched, the stanapatta being simply fastened in a knot at the back (Osella, 2000). Although the saris and the dhotis have never gone out of fashion, with the Persian influences in Indian fashion, women started wearing long tunics that went down to the knees with trousers that were known aschuridars. It also includes the very popular, versatile, comfortable and stylishsalwar-kameez. Thesalwaris a loose pajama like trouser whose legs are wide at the top and narrow at the ankle whereas kameez is a long tunic that goes down till the knees, the sides of which are left open below the waist-line, giving the wearer great freedom of movement. The basic design of this has been modified in various ways since ancient days (Jessica Pudussery, 2009). Apart from clothes, Gold plays a major role in Indian fashion and the use of it has been a tradition, long enjoyed by Indian women since early ages. Ornaments made of gold, combined with precious and semi-precious gems and beads, are the most popular ones. As the story goes on, it is said that traditionally Indian ornaments had an e conomic value for women. The ornaments given to her at her wedding constituted a daughters inheritance from her father (which was earlier referred to as Dowry). Though this no longer holds true, a brides ornaments is considered as a financial security for her throughout life. In India the appearance of dressing styles is more towards a cosmopolitan way rather than region specific; the cause of this change can be reflected back to the early days of Indian Independence. Later on globalization bought about huge changes and this can be considered as one of the major factors witnessed in Indian fashion industry, were significance noticeable changes in styles have happened in connection with Indian dressing. Indias rapidly expanding economy has provided the basis for a fundamental change, the emergence of what is called a new vanguard increasingly dictating Indias political and economic direction (India child, 2000). There can been seen an increasingly popularity towards western mode of dressing styles among the urban youth of both sexes. Some young women are trying to incorporate the latest fashion trends within their wardrobe while still following some of the traditional Indian dressing customs. The women youth market is significant not only because of it she er size and the spending power but since they are the trend setters for rest of the population. Young women generally pay more emphasis on their appearance than older people and thus clothing occupies a more central position. They are more likely to be fashion conscious and hence are frequent buyers and they usually prefer wearing casuals (Gowswamy Roy, 2007). Although traditional dress is still worn in India, according to V.P. Sharma, an Indian worker working as a weaver in the traditional handloom sari industry in Bihar since 1988, blames the trend in womens changing tastes for handloom saris, a simple cotton sari that many Indian women wear daily. The plain designs and less appealing colors, plays no significant role for a new modern woman like Rashmi Raniwal who is a 22 year old sales assistant. Sari? she says giggling, I never wear it casually, only for formal occasions. She further adds that women in India welcomes change as it is seen as a mark of progress. There is a common view that people would consider, a woman clothed in western formal wear is more empowered than her traditional counter parts. (Time Magazine 2009). In globalized modern India mens fashion hasnt changed significantly from season to season whereas business clothing has undergone few changes but its more of being professional than being fashionable. Personal hygiene is part of the success equation, freshly scrubbed wins out over heavily fragranced. The finishing touch for Indian business professionals is his choice of accessories like briefcase, portfolio and pen but when it comes to sealing the deal, a top of the line suit, a silk tie and a good pair of leather shoes would make things perfect and professional. Its all about presenting themselves in a way that makes the business clients feel comfortable and confident on them. Dressing for success is still the rule that is being followed. It was during the late 1970s and 80s the importance of women in work place began to have a prominent role than ever before. They gradually moved into positions that had been traditionally held by men. Many of them even thought that they need to imi tate males business clothing to look appropriate for the position; the outcome was, women seen dressed in skirted suits and jackets with tailored blouses. While the business women now wear trousers to work, she does it with the intention to look professional. (Doris, 2005). Like the men the same overall rules apply to womens work atmosphere as well, business clothing is not a reflection of the latest fashion trend but it is to notice herself as a professional. They think that they should be noticed for who they are and their professional skills rather than the fashionable clothes they wear. The business wear should be appropriate for the industry and the position they hold within the industry. In the 1960s and 70s, this whole bit of buildup of wealth in India was still suffering from a Gandhian hangover. Even though there were a whole lot of families who were wealthy all over India from North to South, all their lifestyles were very low key. They were not exhibitionist or were not into the whole consumer culture. The trend has now changed completely and we can see a complete lifestyle transformation on spending habits from cell phone, holiday destination to latest fashion, which earlier would have triggered a sense of guilt that in a nation like India a kind of vulgar exhibition of wealth is contradictory to its own values. Consumerism has now become an Indian value and the new Indian middle class is making its voice heard everywhere. The middle class is hard to define precisely, is bracketed on either side by the upper and lower echelons. It is not a single stratum of society but straddles town and countryside. It encompasses prosperous farmers, white-collar workers, busi ness people, military personnel and myriad others, all actively working towards a prosperous life (Fernandes, 2006). Members of the upper class which is around 1 percent of the population, are owners of large properties, members of exclusive clubs and vacationers in foreign lands, and include industrialists, former maharajas, movie stars and top executives. Below the middle class is perhaps a third of the population who are ordinary farmers, trades people, artisans and professional workers (Britannica 2009). In todays fashion conscious society, with numeral number of designers, it would be a difficult to note down some of the top fashion designers all over the world. The superiority of designer clothing gives one the satisfaction of owing a designer piece that is unique in every way. The emergence of western concepts of displaying fashion shows has now become a common event in India. The so called catwalk models started displaying collections of designers on ramp. It was in 1932, the first fashion catwalk was organized in India by Catherine Courney. Now it can be seen as a common every day event with many conceptual and theme based shows. Indians have started exploring new avenues with their modern hybrid fashion trends which is a blend of the old traditional and the new modern and is gearing up to International exposure. This fact can be proved by the existence of eighty plus fashion schools in India were young vibrant designers are trained to face the international arena. Recently, som e of the worlds famous fashion designers like Armani, Fendi and Myiake all have been fascinated and drawn by the elements of the exotic Indian culture and traditions (Mark 2008). India, which perfectly mixes the spirit of adventure, the sense of mystery and majesty with the principles of elegance, sophistication and modernity, has long been a wonderful source of inspiration for many internationally acclaimed fashion designers. In Paris, Dries Van Naton, (The Telegraph, 2009) one of the new fashion leaders and the member of the so- called ââ¬Å"Belgain Fourâ⬠presented a collection of layered chiffon raps dresses saris and kurtha looks alikes. The color palettes of these modern western designers are drawing from the colors of vibrant Indian Rajasthan Desert at sundown using rich golds red and green. Fashion designers are credited for their mastery in embedding their creations with works of art that embellish the beauty of a woman. Its a fact that all of us are different from e ach other and seldom have the perfect figure and elegant personality that should be flaunted. Its also a truth that nobody is perfect, we all vary in height, color and characteristics. Its the magical hands of the fashion designers that transform one through intelligent smart dressing. They shape up the body in the most modest manner and make people look stunning and sensuous. There is something unique about every designer, one might focus on ethnic styling while the other on hottest western collections. The Indian movie industry has contributed and provided inspiration for the gloriously rich Technicolor summer fashion. Asia had a huge influence on the spring/summer 2002 designer catwalks and this resulted in the high street awash with bright turquoise, fuchsia, brocade and emerald tops, skirts and trousers (Colin 2004). With the changing times the Indian fashion designers have brought about a storm in this glamour world with their commendably fabulous variety both internationally and locally. A huge chunk of latest fashion is made out of expensive designer clothing. These range from expensive saris to other traditional outfits which are stitched with semi-precious stones. These are exclusively made to cater the taste and preference of particular individuals to be worn during special occasions. Some even focus on modern expensive western fashion brands to make their presence felt. All these trends can be seen in Indias growing class of the super-rich which constitutes the maharajas and other like leading movie stars and industrialists. According to CapGemini Merrill Lynch Asia Pacific Wealth Report 2008, the number of Indians with more than $1 million in assets has grown since last year by 22%, to 167,000, more than in any other Asian country. Finally, Indian fashion beauties on the world stage canno t be ignored or left out of fashion since its the women beauties of India who bought about major changes in outlook of fashion, though they were left behind in the early days. Lara Dutta (Miss Universe 2000) and Priyanka Chopra (Miss World 2000) are the few to name as the world renowned Indian beautys who contributed to these changes. Indian fashion got International exposure and acclamation through the medium of such beauty contests. Unlike uniforms, the way we dress of our own accord involves a number of subconscious decisions. There is a concept in fashion that nothing is new, in a sense everything has been done before. This is coming closer to obvious reality, although the direction is not yet decided, it is almost certain that women will use fashion as an extension of their freedom and being no longer limited by the boundaries of class. Now people like to dress in style which is accepted globally and has become an aspect of ones identity and personality.

Small Pox :: essays research papers
Smallpox has been one of the most dangerous and deadly cursesââ¬â¢ ever placed on humankind. Even illnesses as terrible as the plague, cholera, and yellow fever have not had such a universal effect. Smallpox is a parasitic virus (a virus destructive to the host) called variola. Itââ¬â¢s considered to be a ââ¬Å"crowd diseaseâ⬠, spreading only through people and requiring a large densely populated area to survive. If the virus is cut off from new host bodies it dies out. Smallpox is spread by what is called ââ¬Å"droplet infection.â⬠ââ¬Å"Dropletsâ⬠refers to body fluid that escapes into the open air such as moisture does when you sneeze. The smallpox virus also remains active on a human corpse for up to three weeks and can be passed through the dead host to the living host that way and also through items such as blankets and clothing, which remain infected for up to one year. Patients affected with smallpox will generally begin to show symptoms 9-12 days after exposure. These symptoms begin with depression, fever, rigors, vomiting, headache, and backache. In several cases patients have become disoriented and/or delirious. In other cases a distinct rash will begin to form on face, hands and legs in this phase. All others with begin to notice the rash within a few days. Following the outbreak of the rash on the face, it begins to spread to the chest. Cuts that have formed on face and body begin to turn into blisters and eventually into scabs during the healing process. The virus may attack the eyes, lungs, throat, heart and/or liver and lead to death. The first recorded smallpox outbreak occurred in 1350 BC during the Egyptian-Hittite war. The illness was passed from Egyptian prisoners to the Hittite population affecting both soldiers and civilians. Although it wasnââ¬â¢t until the late 1600ââ¬â¢s that people in Europe and Asia accidentally discovered that those infected with smallpox through a scratch on the skin, suffered from a less severe form of the disease than those who contracted it through the respiratory tract. In the early 1700ââ¬â¢s doctors began to store samples of smallpox pus and scabs in jars. If an outbreak occurred the doctor would make a small cut in a personââ¬â¢s arm and smeared the pus into the wound. This process of intentionally infecting a person with the smallpox virus in order to make them immune to the disease in the future was called inoculation. Theme Of Lord Of The Flies :: essays research papers
Hope in One Person As a whole society we all need rules and punishments to keep unruly people in line. Though we are all not the same type of people, there is all ways a natural born leader to bond a discouraged and uncooperative group of people together towards hope. These natural talents are demonstrated by a 12 year old boy named Ralph, he uses his skills to survive in the insane island in the novel, Lord of the Flies. Leadership encourages hope within the doubtful group of kids headed by Ralph in the novel, Lord of the Flies. Ralph's leadership brings the boys together by giving them a common goal to survive. By giving the boys a common goal they respect one other and have a sense of togetherness to complete their goal to survive. Also their respect for each other brings peace and happiness for a little while on the island. Through Ralph's leadership, hope is obtainable for all those who live on the island. For example hope offers a reason for living and for doing their assigned duties. Through Ralph's leadership he orders the building of a signal fire, for that day that they may be rescued. The idea of the fire enhances the capability of Ralph's leadership skills and reasoning. This also ensures Ralph the confidence to be more then willing to face greater and more impossible challenges in the near future. Through Ralph's Leadership, hope was not a dream and it brought reality towards rescue. Trust destroyed peace within the society Ralph had built in the novel, Lord of the Flies. Trust is the bases of leadership, without trust there is no team to survive. When Ralph trusted the littleuns to work without his guidance, he put faith in them that they will work for their common goal to survive. In stead of working they screwed around, that cost them dearly in up coming events in the book. Ralph's other fatal mistake was to trust Jack with power. Without knowing it Jack single handily formed a second tribe, which was full of hate, fear, and evil. Ralph's trust in Jack nearly killed him and other innocent life on the island, but indeed it paid a toll that cost Simon and Piggy's life as well. Ralph trusted each member of his tribe to treat others with the same respect he would have liked to be treated.

History and Politics of the Mexican Revolution Essay
The Mexican revolution was one of the most significant catastrophe in the twentieth century, which involved four momentous leader by the name of Madero , Diaz , Zapata and Obrengo. According to Alan Knight, author of the article ââ¬Å"The Mexican Revolutionâ⬠, ââ¬Å"the Mexican revolution started as a protest of the middle class against the dictatorship of Porfrio Diazâ⬠. A small minority of people were control of most of the countryââ¬â¢s power and wealth, while the major of the population worked in poverty. According to Dan la Botz, author of article ââ¬Å"The Mexican revolution part1, 1910-1920, ââ¬Å"Tens of thousand of men and women fought in battles in many region of the country to end the dictatorship and overthrow the leaderâ⬠. The attempt to mold a new generation that would continue the revolutionââ¬â¢s efforts for the people into the future. Their campaign included programs for land reform, work protection, widespread literacy, and mandatory schools. The nation fund a mental economic, institution were transformed as a basic Agriculture production unit and the foreign own oil industry nationalized. In the 1910s a politician and military struggle arrived among various rival politicians, economic and social groups, the working class and the peasantry were defeated and subordinated to new master. The revolution began as an attempt to overthrow Porfrio Diaz who was a dictator of Mexico. According to Dan La Batz , author of ââ¬Å"Mexican Revolution part 1 ,1910-1920â⬠, ââ¬Å"Mexicoââ¬â¢s liberal who wanted a free market capitalist county like England and United States, battle consecutive who wanted a count more like Spain with its monarchy, powerful catholic church and feudal hierarchy (Botz 26). Diaz revived and expanded the nation economy, generally raising the levels of prosperity in the nation. The administration introduce changes that commercialized agriculture, modernized mining, financed industries, initiated railroads and enticed consumer. During the Porfrio ratio, as railroad construction dominated popular attention, city resident also witnesses the introduction of additional technology such as gas lighting, tramlines and other advances. Railroad transported raw material to the United States and Europe. Ordinary people who supplied the labor and raw materials were tricked to increase the countryââ¬â¢s economy and Diaz later exploited domestic workers. Diaz fought alongside Mexican president benito Juarez and then against intervention. Diaz then emerged as a leading general and became president in 1876. Diaz served 34 years as the president of Mexico. Diaz took land from villages until most peasants had been reducing from small proprietors to day laborers. Diaz existence caused destruction upon the economy and social lives of Mexicans. He fought against his opponents and wag war. Diaz promised a free election against Francisco Madero another leader of Mexico who ran for election, after it became obvious he might not win. According to Beezley Williams H author of ââ¬Å"Mexicans in Revolution 1910-1946: An introductionâ⬠ââ¬Å"Francisco Madero became a revolutionary by accident, his entire life, his family, his education, his marriage and his early business efforts-marked him as a member of the elite (Williams 36). Maderoââ¬â¢s family believed that his campaign was foolhardy if not suicidal. He campaign across the nation of Mexico with the aim of no presidential election. Maderoââ¬â¢s movement was soon swelled with people who saw his campaign not only a chance for the politicial democracy but also the opportunity to struggle for more fundamental social change. Madero campaign threatened Diaz which forced him to get Madero arrested on felony charges and jailed in San Luis Potosi under house arrest in the summer 1910. In July 1910 with the help of his wealthy and politically connected family,Madero fled from San Luis Potosi to San Antonio, Texas and transformed the Anti reelection political organization for revolution to begin November 20. Madero issued his manifesto, the plan of San Luis, The plan laid out his vision of polotican democracy emphasizing the no presidential reelection. Madero slogans was ââ¬Å"Effective Suffrage (that is honest voting) No reelection (prevent Diaz pattern of holding office) and Municipoo Libre( local control of issue such as taxes). Madero was elected president and assumed power in November 1911. By November 911 Zapata, another Mexican leader and his troops were at war with Maderoââ¬â¢s Government. Zapata movement focuses on four main issues which was lands; which should be given to those who work for it, secondly labor unions; which had been suspended under Diaz, fought for their rights to organize and to strike and demand protective legislation for workers, thirdly education; for the country last battle with Catholic Church, the demand for free public education and finally ownership of oil nd mineral; all natural resources of Mexico should belong to is people. Zapata army was driven out of Mexico in the early 1916 by Carranzaââ¬â¢s troop who was a Mexican leader that fought against Zapata. After this shift by Carranzaââ¬â¢s troops, Zapata had no hope of fighting back Carranza because he didnââ¬â¢t have as much army as Zapata. According to Micheal Mathes author of article ââ¬Å"Frontier Settlement in Mexican Californiaâ⬠, with the help of chief advisor , Gildardo Magana he started an alliance for anyone who will want to fight Carranza (Mathes 503). Venustiano Carranza was the son of a middle class and who had been educated in Mexico to become part of the political elite. Carranza joined Maderoââ¬â¢s rebellion and became president after the death of Madero. Carranza and his followers attempted to remodel cities, not by pulling down statues, wrecking monuments, or destroying the house of the old regime, but by creating a new society. The Mexican revolution was then divided into two rival bourgeois and plebian. According to WM. O.à OWEN, author of ââ¬Å"The Mexican Revolution, Its progress , cause , purpose and probable resultâ⬠Carranzaââ¬â¢s constructional forces aimed to create a new nationalist state which could provide stability for Mexican born and foreign investors, while Connectionist led by Pancho Villa and Emiliano Zapata, desire to carry out the democratic and social reforms demanded by the country peasants and workers. The Constitutionalist would win the civil war because they understand the significant of the labor movement. Carranzaââ¬â¢s armies had been successful in defeating the forces of Villa and Zapata. Carranza and his advisors produce a new constitution which settled in law and the principle issue of the revolution. These laws were divided into four articles. Article 27 provided the break up of the haciendas and distribution of land to peasant and indigenous community. Article 123 gave workers the right to organize unions and strike and create legislation. Article 3 ended the Catholic Churchââ¬â¢s control of education, creating the free, lay public schools and finally, Article 130 banned the church from Mexican politics and society. Carranzaââ¬â¢s forces continue to fight opposition leaders which he eventually assassinating Emiliano Zapata. On may 21 1920 the rebel forces captured and killed Carranza and the general Obrengon took power. Obrengon became president holding office from 1920-1924and Huerta revolt against President Obrengo in 1923. In conclusion lands were given to the working class and peasant, housing and farming territory and also ranching was easier to get. During the decades from 1917 to 1946 revolutionaries initiated a variety of campaign to bring revolution to people. At the same time the revolutionaries initiate campaign that proved to be only partially successful, to remake the symbols of Profrio rian regime in the image of the revolution.

Computer Security Examination Essay
Healthcare companies, like ABC Healthcare, that operate as for-profit entities, are facing a multitude of challenges. The regulatory environment is becoming more restrictive, viruses and worms are growing more pervasive and damaging, and ABC Healthcareââ¬â¢s stakeholders are demanding more flexible access to their systems. The healthcare industry is experiencing significant regulatory pressures that mandate prudent information security and systems management practices. Furthermore, the continued pressure to reduce cost requires that management focus on streamlining operations, reducing management overhead and minimizing human intervention. The regulatory focus at ABC Healthcare is on the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) and Sarbanes-Oxley (SOX). Both pieces of legislation highlight the need for good systems administration and controls, but focus on different aspects of the business. The main focus of HIPAA is to protect personally identifiable health information while SOX is concerned with data that impacts financial reporting. Violations may be met with both civil and criminal penalties. Therefore, the company must be ever watchful of new threats to their systems, data, and business operations. The most prevalent security related threat to on-going business operations is the continued development and propagation of viruses and worms. Virus and worm prevention or containment is a vital component to the overall risk mitigation strategy. Virus and worm outbreaks have multiple cost aspects for the company including lost patient charges due to system unavailability, lost productivity because of recovery efforts due to infection, and potential regulatory impacts depending on the virus or worm payload. However, the company must balance risk with opportunities in order to serve the stakeholders and grow the business. ABC Healthcareââ¬â¢s stakeholders include multiple groups that depend on or need access to clinical and/or financial systems in order to help support and grow the company. The access requirements and associated risk model varies by user group. The main access groups are internal only users (i.e. nurses, hourly employee, etc.), internal/remote users (i.e. salaried employees, doctors, etc.), and business partners (i.e. collection agencies, banks, etc.). Risk mitigation solutions must be developed for each user group to help ensure that the company recognizes the benefit that each group brings and to minimize the risk to business operations. The high-level management goals of the network design implementation are as follows: Support the business and balance security requirements without introducing significant overhead and complexity; Maintain and enhance security without significantly increasing management overhead or complexity; Implement systems that are industry supported (standards where appropriate), scalable, and fault-tolerant; Ensure that the design is implemented to help ensure compliance with any and all applicable regulations; Proper management of access control for legitimate users and malicious users is of the utmost importance for the security of the ABC Healthcare management system. The threat is not limited to outside malicious users but also legitimate users engaged in illegitimate activity. Based on the above description you are to provide a recommendation of how you would address each of the following ABC Healthcareââ¬â¢s computer network security requirements. Note, whereas cost is typically an important factor, this is not a consideration for this case analysis. Therefore, you do not need to include cost estimates. Your solution should have the ââ¬Å"right feelâ⬠, despite the lack of depth or details necessary to be accepted by upper management. Be specific in your answers. Write them as if you were writing a proposal to your boss. Since you are developing a solution to a specific circumstance, material that is copied from an outside source will not likely fit so everything should be in your own words. 1. Describe your technical recommendation for addressing the security requirements in the overall technical design of the ABC Healthcare network. This should include both internal and external (untrusted and trusted) aspects. Untrusted would include user connectivity to the Internet. The ââ¬Å"trustedâ⬠network has the main purpose of supporting the business functions of known entities (i.e. partners, suppliers, etc.) which have a business relationship with the company. Note that you are to concentrate on the physical and logical level, including the type of hardware and software, however you are not expected to provide specific low level details in terms of equipment suppliers or model numbers, etc. for your recommended design. (30 points) 2. 3. Discuss the way you will address requirements for system monitoring,à logging, auditing, including complying with any legal regulations. (10 points) 4. Describe how the system will identify and authenticate all the users who attempt to access ABC Healthcare information resources. (10 points) 5. Discuss how the system shall recover from attacks, failures, and accidents. (10 points) 6. Discuss how the system will address User Account Management and related security improvements. (10 points) 7. Complete the Cyber Security Action Plan (see attached spreadsheet) (30 points)

Gantt chart Essay
The phenomena of calendar effects in stock markets seem to be a center of curiosity for many researchers across the world. Following many studies about the significance of calendar anomalies, testing the presence of Monday effect and January effect appears to be an area of interest. The aim of this study is to discuss about calendar anomalies and its significance. It should be noted that the study will focus mainly on Monday effect and January effect on the stock returns of companies listed on SEM-7. The research proposal will consist mainly of the literature review part and the methodology part. 2.LITERATURE REVIEW 2.1DEFINITON OF BASIC CONCEPTS Calendar anomalies are effects which include apparently different behavior of stock markets on different days of the week, month and year. Calendar effect may also be defined as a collection of theories that state that certain days or month are subject to above price changes in stock market and can therefore represent good or bad times to invest. Brooks and Persand (2001) defined calendar effects as the tendency of stock returns ââ¬Å"to display systematic patterns at certain times of the day, week, month or year â⬠. As mentioned above, the study will discuss mainly on Monday effect and January effect. The day of the week effect also called Monday effect indicates that the average daily return of the market is not the same for all days of the week as we would expect on basis of Efficient Market theory. Monday effect is a theory which states that return of the last trading day is the highest and return on the first trading day is the lowest across the days of the week. January effect is a phenomenon whereby stocks claim higher rates of returns during January compared to any other month. Smaller stocks tend to beat bigger stocks during this period. The January effect also known as ââ¬Å"year-end effectâ⬠indicates rise in price during the period starting on the last day of December and ending on the fifth trading day of January . The Stock Exchange of Mauritius was incorporated in Mauritius on March 30, 1989 as a private limited company responsible for the operation and promotion of an efficient and regulated securities market in Mauritius. The SEM operates two markets namely the official market and the Development & Enterprise Market (DEM). The study will focus only on the official market. On 31 March 1998, the Stock Exchange of Mauritius launched the index SEM-7, comprising companies listed on its official market. The SEM-7 comprises the seven largest qualified companies of the official market measured in terms of market capitalization, liquidity and investibility criteria. Therefore, the study will be based on the 7 companies in the SEM-7. 2.2Theoretical Explanation on Calendar effects EFFICIENT MARKET THEORY The growing number of studies proving the significance of calendar anomalies has led to doubts on ââ¬Å"Efficient Market Hypothesisâ⬠. According to Fama (1970), ââ¬Å"a capital market is efficient if all the information set is fully reflected in securities pricesâ⬠. Efficient market hypothesis is one of the theories which states that, in whichever form, all the information is completely integrated in the share prices and therefore no one can beat the market. There are three form of market efficiency; weak form, semi-strong form and strong form based on set of information. The weak form efficiency states that no one can outperform the market based on past information while in the semi-strong form, despite using public information, the market cannot be beaten. The strong form efficiency states that no one can beat the market despite using past, public and private information. As a result, according to the efficient market theory, the calendar anomalies have no effect on the share prices and that no one can use this anomaly to gain abnormal returns. MONDAY EFFECT As already mentioned above, Monday effect, also known as weekend effect, is a theory according to which returns on Monday is less than the other trading days. Two hypotheses that have been formulated to explain Monday effect are Calendar Time Hypothesis and Trading Time Hypothesis. According to the Calendar Time Hypothesis, Mondayââ¬â¢s average return will be different from the other daysââ¬â¢ average returns. A reason for this difference is that Mondayââ¬â¢s average return will be three times higher than the average returns of the other working days. According to Trading Time Hypothesis, the returns on stock are generated during a transaction. This indicates that average returns will be the same for all weekdays including Monday. JANUARY EFFECT January effect occurs when there is a general rise in stock prices during the month of January. January effect is also known as small firm in January effect because it is most frequently observed in small cap stocks . The nature of this anomaly suggests that the market is not efficient as market efficiency would suggest that this effect would disappear. The theories which explain January effect are: â⬠¢Tax-Loss Selling Hypothesis This hypothesis was first suggested by Branch (1997) . In order to reduce tax liabilities, investors sell their loser stocks in December and create capital losses which they offset with the capital gain. Due to excessive selling of shares in December, stock prices are decreased and then investors purchase it again in early January which forces stock prices to rise. However, it is noteworthy of the fact that since in Mauritius, capital gains is not liable for tax purposes, this hypothesis cannot be used to explain January effect. â⬠¢Window-dressing Hypothesis Some portfolio managers also do window dressing to their portfolio by creating January effect. Since they have to report their portfolio holding as at 31 December, they just sell riskier stocks before 31 December in order to make their portfolio look less risky on Annual Report. Later on, they just purchase the risky securities again in a view to earn high profits. â⬠¢Information Release Hypothesis According to this hypothesis, also known as differential information effect, the excess January returns are the effect of significant information releases that occur in the first few days of January. This hypothesis relies on how discrepancy in the quantity of information available for different companies may result in different returns. According to Rozeff and Kinney (1976), distribution of year-end information may have a greater effect on the prices of small firmsââ¬â¢ securities relative to large firms because the market for small firm stock is less efficient . 2.3Empirical evidences on Calendar effects In order to investigate on the existence of calendar anomalies, there have been several studies conducted obtaining different results. In a recent paper by Haug and Hirshcey (2005) on January effect, evidence is found that the anomaly is significant for small cap stocks and continues to be consistent over time . Moreover, Fountas and Segredakis (2002) investigate about the significance of the monthly seasonality in the Amman Stock Exchange and find very significant January effects in this market.

An Analysis Of Communication Disorders Education Essay
The manner we communicate is an of import facet throughout all of our lives. It can state a batch about who we are, our position, and instruction. Not everyone communicates in the same manner as others. Some people have lacks such as autism or damage that decelerate down communicating development. Although these upsets are good known our society has non made it a precedence to do the survey of Communications a chief focal point of survey until college. Under-developed communicating can impact the person ââ¬Ës household and hereafter if it is non taken attention of. Using my assortment of beginnings I intend to turn to these issues and solutions to assist educate coevalss to come to raise consciousness and emphasize the importance of communicating. This reappraisal will get down with understanding why communicating and the ability to hold skill in public-speaking are of import. It will so go on throughout to explicate different types of linguistic communication upsets through a kid ââ¬Ës development and terminal with household version. ââ¬Å" The Importance of Communication and Public-Speaking Skills â⬠written by Leo F. Parvis emphasizes the importance of Communication. He names the different definitions of communicating and Aristotle ââ¬Ës five elements. Isabelle Rapin and Lorna Wing ââ¬Ës book Preschool Children with Inadequate Communication: Developmental Language Disorder, Autism, Low IQ, discusses the categorization of different communicating upsets and autism along with the struggles that follow them. In add-on they besides go into item about the historical information of communicating lacks and autism. Rhea Paul PHD wrote the book ââ¬Å" Language Disorders: Through Infancy and Adolescence. In the beginni ng of the book she talks about how no 1 can truly specify what a Language Disorder is. She than takes the clip to pick apart her ain definition of a Language Disorder. Following she talks about the different manner to name person with holding a lack while giving suggestion on how to get by. Marie M. Bristol wrote the diary ââ¬Å" Mothers of Children with Autism or Communication Disorders: Successful Adaptation and the Double ABCX Model â⬠based off of a survey that demonstrates the badness of communicating upsets and the consequence on the households. It consists of the badness, matrimonial version, emphasis on the household, and how they handle the situation.A In ââ¬Å" The Importance of Communication and Public-Speaking Skills â⬠Leo F. Parvis believes schools have n't been persevering plenty in stressing the importance for communicating. He defines the word ââ¬Å" communicating â⬠is a assortment of ways some being ; the province of being connected, the look of oneself that is readily and clearly understood, and the transferring of intending between persons. He states, ââ¬Å" Communication, a complex procedure, is non an easy accomplishment to hone. However, it is the most important accomplishment in human life â⬠( 1 ) . In early 1999, the Chronicle of Higher Education discussed the issue that schools have lost the importance of learning the art of communicating. Parvis writes ââ¬Å" The argument went on for several hebdomads, and the bulk of participants who were experts in communicating surveies believed that in recent old ages, establishments of higher acquisition have paid less attending to talking accomplishments than in the yesteryear â⬠( 1 ) . We use communicating in our mundane lives and it has become a major factor for our hereafters. If the instruction system does non understand the importance, it will finally go a dying field. Without this field we will non seek the demand to widen our vocabulary and could take to major miscommunications. This may non look like a immense hazard, but imagine holding a miscommunication between states that could take to an unneeded war. ââ¬Å" We need to advance this accomplishment among our co-workers and carry more environmental wellness professionals to actively take part in events and assemblages, acquire acquainted with the thought of engagement, be willing to portion their ideas, and contribute in any manner possible â⬠( Parvis, 1 ) . Parvis names the five factors of Public-Speaking derived from Aristotle: the talker, the message, the audience, the juncture, and the consequence. ââ¬Å" By building this list, Aristotle, was reding talkers to build addresss for different audiences, on different occasions, for different effects â⬠( Parvis, 2 ) . One of the most of import facets of communicating that Parivs negotiations about is listening. To listen agencies to be able to grok, larn, and finally repeat by using to our ain addresss in the hereafter. If we can get the hang all of these countries of communicating we will be ready to take on any challenge that comes our manner. To understand linguistic communication upsets we need to specify what one is. Rhea Paul is the writer of Language Disorders: Through Infancy and Adolescence. The get downing she states that no 1 can truly specify what a Language Disorder is. After speaking about her linguistic communication seminar category that she had taken as a alumnus pupil she says non even her instructor had a clear definition of what a linguistic communication upset was. She says, ââ¬Å" A You mayA be surprised to larn that specifying kids ââ¬Ës linguistic communication upsets is non a simple affair or even one about which everyone in the field agrees â⬠( 3 ) . She so gave her ain personal definition of what a linguistic communication upset was ââ¬Å" kids can be described as holding linguistic communication upsets if they have a important shortage in larning to speak, under-stand, or utilize any facet of linguistic communication suitably, comparative toA both environmental and norm-referenced outlo oks forA kids of similar developmental degree â⬠( 97 ) . The definition is really obscure and leaves room for oppugning. It does turn out, nevertheless, if a linguistic communication upset is difficult to specify, it must be even harder to name, and so dainty. Communication shortages are one of the most common grounds that affect mental development. Paul following takes a survey from Darley ( 1991 ) to show how an person would be diagnosed with a lack. The survey is divided into two phases called: assessment and diagnosing. The appraisal procedure consists of past clinical informations along with questionnaires provided by the parents and an scrutiny of the person. The diagnosing is the term used when sorting the issue and labeling it. An assessment procedure that makes these two phases less distinguishable is called the descriptive-developmental attack. ââ¬Å" The end of this attack is to make up one's mind whether the kid has a important shortage inA communicating and to depict that shortage, if identified, A in every bit much item as possible, comparative to the normal sequence of linguistic communication acquisition â⬠( Paul, 21 ) . This attack focuses less on the ââ¬Å" label â⬠and more on the description which is why it is non chiefly used. In other words, it is more concerned with how the single communicates instead than naming them with a type of upset. Paul believes it is the moral responsibility of address diagnosticians to better and forestall linguistic communication upsets: ââ¬Å" Why should bar be our concern? Are we non languageA diagnosticians, people who diagnose and treat disordersA of linguistic communication acquisition? Is n't remediation our concern? Certainly it is â⬠( Paul, 97 ) . We tend to disregard the countries of rehabilitation and bar because of the costs that it would imply and the emotional hurt that it would put on the household ââ¬Ës shoulders. Paul estimated the cost values for different types of upsets and the particular necessities that would be indispensable. A kid with mental deceleration would necessitate particular instruction plans that could be up to $ 13,000 dollars a twelvemonth, and if they need residential intervention it could be closer to $ 25,000. ââ¬Å" In 1984, the AmericanA Speech-Language and Hearing Association ( ASHA ) estimated that forestalling even one instance of mental retardationA can ensue in long-run nest eggs of more than $ 1 million, A and the figure would be even higher today â⬠( Paul, 97 ) . Money, as you see, has become a factor in turn toing the issue of linguistic communication upsets. In 1990, the Department of Health and Human Services made ends to assist raise consciousness and cut down hazards because they excessively, believe like Rhea Paul, that we have an duty to assist forestall these upsets and acquire the needed attention for them. Isabelle Rapin and Lorna Wing ââ¬Ës book Preschool Children with Inadequate Communication: Developmental Language Disorder, Autism, Low IQ explains the difference between Autism and Asperger ââ¬Ës. The two upsets have related characteristics such as: damages in mutual interactions, and stereotyped involvements in activities. Asperger ââ¬Ës will non be diagnosed if the person has delayed linguistic communication and cognitive development. Cognitive development trades with concentrating on a kid ââ¬Ës development in footings of information processing, conceptual resources, perceptual accomplishment, linguistic communication acquisition, and other facets of encephalon development. The book presents several surveies that represent the job of specific diagnosing with kids who do non pass on efficaciously. The survey is intended to demo the different types of trials that encephalon imagination, EEGs, and chromosome and chemical trials infrequently provide an reply for. Determining whether or non a kid at such a immature age has autism is really hard so the survey separated ââ¬Å" normal â⬠kids with no diagnosings in any type of communicating lack and those who showed autistic characteristics and under-developed communicating. Rapin and Wing believe it is more effectual to detect the manner a kid interacts and plays instead than giving a series of trials. ââ¬Å" Careful attending to the kid ââ¬Ës linguistic communication and behaviour, ability to play creatively, and analysis of neuropsychological trials and linguistic communication are much more enlightening for geting at a right diagnosing â⬠( Rapin Wing, 1 ) . Along with observation they split a sum of 556 kids up into five different groups, and collected historical informations. They studied past households members who may hold had any type of linguistic communication upsets. Of the kids that were examined 201 specifically had Developmental Language Disorder ( DLD ) . In Bristol ââ¬Ës diary ââ¬Å" Mothers of Children with Autism or Communication Disorders: Successful Adaptation and the Double ABCX Model â⬠she talks of a survey that demonstrates the badness of communicating upsets and the consequence on the households. It looked into 45 different households with person who was autistic and or consisted of a communicating -impaired kid. It consists of the badness, matrimonial version, emphasis on the household, and how they cope. The ABCX Formula was founded in 1958 by Reuben Hill. The ABCX Formula focuses chiefly on variables covering with households different interactions: A ( the crisis-precipitating event/stressor ) B ( the household ââ¬Ës crisis-meeting resources ) C ( the definition the household makes of the event ) produces X ( the crisis ) . Families with a kid with damage have caused great attending because there tends to be more emphasis on those specific households. They have a higher rate of divorce and money issues particularly when a kid must be institutionalized ( even though it has declined ) . ââ¬Å" Even really recent surveies ( DeMyer & A ; Goldberg, 1983 ) indicate that tierce of a treated group of autistic kids were in residential arrangement before age 14 and two-thirds in residential arrangement after that age â⬠( Bristol, 470 ) . Recently, there have been surveies stating that there are many cases when households have had successful versions. The survey was to foretell households working at high emphasis and their ability to get by with the part of autism or terrible communicating upsets. The survey had four hypotheses: foremost that the survey would demo overall healthy version to the terrible autism or communicating upset ; 2nd predicted more equal header forms ; 3rd predicted that the household would self-blame, hold declinations, and finally coiling downward from all the household stresses added to the kid with autism or communicating upset ; and the 4th was that all the emphasiss would pile-up and go more of the issue instead the disability itself. The participants in the survey were classified into five societal categories. Twenty-four fell into three lower categories and 21 fell into two higher categories. In this survey the stressor, or A theoretical account was the handicapped kid. ââ¬Å" Limits on Family Opportunity, was used to measure the extent to which the household had to go through up educational, vocational, or other self-development chances because of the kid â⬠( Bristol, 474 ) . The consequences of the first hypothesis showed that kids with more terrible disability resulted in less matrimonial jobs. In the 2nd hypothesis the anticipation was right in stating it would hold positive parenting, but incorrect in stating that it would hold greater household coherence. On the contrary, the household coherence showed the same for all the hypotheses that greater household coherence came from negative household adaptation instead than healthy. The 3rd hypothesis showed that household with more outside emphasis were less happy in their matrimonies and did non get by every bit good with their disability kid. The badness of the disability did non play a major function in the consequences, these female parents viewed holding a kid with a disability as one of the worst things that could happy to a household. Hypothesis four showed what it had predicted ; all the other stressors would be a major factor instead than the badness of the kid ââ¬Ës disability. The survey hel ps demo all the factors that a household would travel through on top of holding a disability kid and that some households can non get by. Although the beginnings are slackly linked, each shows a different position on Communication upsets. Whether we have a upset or non we all need to pass on in some manner to be able to last mundane life. We need to set more focal point on honing our ain address and being more thankful for the field itself. We should besides larn more about the different types of upsets and do it a precedence to larn how to accommodate to the upsets in instance we may go face-to-face with one in our hereafter. A Communications Major is criticized for being an ââ¬Å" easy manner out â⬠when in world we have the chance to prosecute in surveies like the 1s above. Others may non recognize that they excessively have been prosecuting a communicating country of expertness, but when you are analyzing to be a particular instruction instructor, you are larning to pass on with a kid with a disablement. When you are analyzing to be a Forensic Scientist you are larning to compose labs to be able to pass on in formation scientifically for other scientists to understand. We need communicating, if we can non accommodate now we will hold more of a job if our line of work leads us there or if one our kids are stricken with such a destiny. We overlook these upsets because we are all still in the province of head that it could ne'er go on to us, until it does.
